This garden was planted over chalky and free-draining soil, which was alkaline. This meant a number of shrubs and trees would fail to get the wonderful red and orange leaf colours in autumn. Amongst these are some dogwood trees, Liquid Amber and Amelanchier. I decided on a Euonymus europaeus red cascade (spindle tree) and a Cotinus coggygria Royal Purple (smoke tree) which would give the garden that beautiful red autumn colour and perform well in alkaline soil.
The soil was free draining so a great deal of compost was dug in to help the soil hold on to moisture around the plant roots. Plants that can cope with a deal of drought were also chosen, e.g. Achillea, Digitalis and Sedum.
